Description
The LGBTQ+ Equity Training Series was developed by the University of Arizona Southwest Institute for Research on Women with funding from the City of Tucson and the TPCH Youth Homelessness Demonstration Project. This training series provides context, foundational education, and best practices in homeless assistance program design and delivery related to LGBTQ+ communities with a focus on equity and inclusion. The full training series totals approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes of instruction time.

Training modules include:

Welcome and Overview (11 minutes): This video provides an introduction to the LGBTQ+ Equity Training Series. It includes background on the project purpose and goals, what to expect from the modules and companion guide, an introduction to the training team, and an invitation for learning, growth, and action!

Module 1 - Social Justice and Intersectionality (23 minutes): In this module, Kristen defines social justice and describes its significance as the action that takes us from oppression to liberation. This module also discusses the origins of intersectionality and the utility of this framework in recognizing and combatting oppression. Kristen grounds the conversation with a historical analysis of Black activists who have paved the pathways for this work.

Module 2 - Trends in LGBTQ+ History (24 minutes): In this module, Nicky describes key moments and movements in LGBTQ+ organizing and advocacy, dating back to pre-colonization and moving through to present day. This little-known historical information helps to frame our modern-day efforts toward equity and liberation for LGBTQ+ people.

Module 3 - LGBTQ+ 101 (35 minutes): In LGBTQ+ 101, Kristen and Nicky provide foundational information related to LGBTQ+ identities, including constants that guide our work, contextual underpinnings, and an introduction to the concept of social constructs. This module also defines some terms using the Gender Unicorn and discusses the imperfect nature of language.

Module 4 - Trans and Non-binary Identities - Part 1 (31 minutes): Part I of Trans and Non-binary Identities explores the concept of biological essentialism, or the idea that, like gender, sex is also a social construct. In this module, Kristen and Nicky provide historical and contemporary evidence to explore this concept.

Module 5 - Trans and Non-Binary Identities - Part 2 (35 minutes): Part II of Trans and Non-binary Identities explains the meaning of the trans umbrella, discusses Two-Spirit identities, reviews meanings and guidelines for pronoun use, and sheds light on two significant experiences for trans and non-binary people - dysphoria and transition. Kristen and Nicky also offer tools for showing solidarity and 12 strategies for supporting trans and non-binary young people.

Module 6 - Coming Out (18 minutes): In this module, Nicky provides an overview of the coming out experience including common myths related to coming out, data, and both helpful and unhelpful ways to respond when a person comes out to you. Attendees will recognize that coming out is much more complex than many of us are led to believe.

Module 7 - Solidarity and Confronting Oppression (37 minutes): In this module, Kristen defines solidarity, draws distinctions between traditional allyship and solidarity, shares historical and modern examples of solidarity, and offer suggestions for practicing solidarity by getting involved and taking action. Viewers will recognize that we all have something at stake in the fight against oppression, and that by liberating the most oppressed, we all can achieve freedom.

Module 8 - Best Practices in LGBTQ+ Inclusion (16 minutes): In this module, Shannon reviews several best practices for ensuring that a workplace is safe and affirming for LGBTQ+ employees and clients. Specific recommendations around policies, staff diversity, signage and promotional materials, pronouns, and community engagement will be discussed.
